I hope you'll read this and even if your not Irish, please email in against this to support Irish gamers. The NBS is supposed to bring high quality broadband to the remaining areas of Ireland that don't have access to broadband. It is a requirement of the scheme that it be able to support VOIP, video conferencing and gaming.
3 don't even meet the requirements the government set out for the contract. They are clearly just the cheapest and the government are penny pinching. There is currently a 373 page long thread on Ireland's most popular forum about this companies broadband service.
This has a huge impact on gaming as you can't game properly on a HSDPA connection. The company that should have won the contract and the only other company up for the contract was eircom which would have brought DSL broadband to rural Ireland so rural gamers could play online and access all the services they need to.
eircom would also be suitable for business where as 3 will not be able to provide a true broadband experience to customers as already a lot of their customers in busy areas receive less than dial up speeds (some as low as 5kbps).
Please post this post or a link to this post on every Irish gaming forum you use or forum with Irish people on it and ask them to email Eamon Ryan with disgust at this decision which will have a negative effect on the Irish economy, Irish gamers and rural Ireland for years to come. Gamers can make a difference if enough of us lodge a complaint about this along with the rest of the people affected, the government will have to reconsider this terrible decision.
An insulting official statement from the department of communications is available here:

I'm using 3 broadband and it's disgraceful that it's even allowed to be called 'Broadband'. The max speed that mine gets up to is ~75 kb/s. My friend, who lives only a mile over the road from here, has o2 Mobile Broadband and gets a steady 700kb/s rate, enough to play WoW with.
So yes, I am with you. It is disgraceful.3 Ireland awarded NBS, a joke for gamers
I dont think this kinda advertising is allowed, but the broadband here in Ireland aint that great.Saying that though, I can't complain, mine is fast enough for me.I can play on Xbox Live, and WoW if I wanted.
NTL/Virgin media has the best cover here. my connection is great can have xbox running and 3 computers at times aslong as they arent downloading. change to them. I know people in Dublin and down in Cork that have crackin connections with them

Notice the word Rural. Belfast is in the north too; the broadband infrastructure is much better there. I live about 10 minutes' drive from Derry, and if I want to download something I'll go into an Internet Cafe in Derry.. So much faster.

ah quick read that there, 3 are a bad company for broadband period. friend had them as part of a mobile contract and he found it impossible to play on his xbox most of the time.
